The main title sequence for The Young Pope was designed to feel bold, irreverent, and visually striking, setting the tone for a series that challenges tradition while engaging with it. I was responsible for creating the overall look and feel of the sequence, developing a graphic approach that balances classical imagery with contemporary motion. The goal was to reinterpret familiar religious iconography in a way that felt unexpected, modern, and slightly provocative.
Classic paintings were carefully rotoed and animated to bring still imagery to life, allowing figures and environments to feel subtly active and surreal. A comet passing through each painting was designed and animated as a unifying visual thread, cutting through the imagery as a symbol of disruption and change. This recurring motion element connects the sequence from beginning to end, reinforcing the show’s themes of power, faith, and rupture while transforming traditional artwork into a dynamic, cohesive opening narrative.
