MLB World Baseball Classic 2023
Designer
The MLB World Baseball Classic 2023 design approach was rooted in reflecting the global scale and cultural richness of the tournament. Instead of a traditional sports package, the visual language aimed to balance the prestige of international competition with the vibrant energy unique to the Classic. By emphasizing refined motion and thoughtful typography, the work felt both cinematic and celebratory, honoring the sport’s heritage while presenting it in a fresh, contemporary light.
At the core of the system was a commitment to clarity and impact. Each visual element was crafted to communicate information with precision while maintaining emotional resonance, whether through elegant transitions, stadium-inspired textures, or dynamic spatial layouts. This balance allowed the package to feel premium without sacrificing accessibility, making every graphic both informative and engaging for the audience.
Initial Design Sequence
The storyboard opens with a cinematic, restrained build. A darkened stadium and subtle global graphic motifs set the tone, suggesting travel, distance, and international connection. One by one, all-star athletes from different countries are introduced in focused hero shots. National colors appear as refined accents while bold typography brings in player names and country identifiers, establishing pride and identity without overwhelming the imagery.
Momentum builds as the sequence cuts between athletes across continents, connecting swings, pitches, and defensive plays through rhythmic edits and motion-driven transitions. Split frames and layered type heighten anticipation, weaving dates, locations, and matchups directly into the action. The film culminates in a unified montage that brings all players together before landing on the World Baseball Classic title, reinforcing the idea of global competition powered by the world’s best talent.
Revised Design Sequence
The design was intentionally reduced to focus on four star athletes, allowing each moment to feel bold, clear, and iconic. Rather than overwhelming the sequence with scale, the approach emphasized restraint, giving each athlete space to stand as a representative of their country and their role on the world stage.
National flags were treated as visual elements and textures, woven directly into the compositions rather than used as literal backdrops. Colors, patterns, and fabric-like movement from each flag interacted with the athletes through motion and layering, reinforcing identity while maintaining a cohesive visual system. This distilled approach highlighted individuality and national pride while keeping the storytelling focused, elegant, and impactful.
